Stopping Bullying At School

Bullying at school for many students makes life miserable and with the advent of social media and social networking, the bullying is often more emotional and psychological than it is physical. No matter the method, getting this bullying stopped has to come from individual decisions made by the students to show respect to their classmates.

One of the root causes of bullying is a lack of self confidence on the part of the one doing the bullying. This insecurity creates a subconscious need to be superior in some way amongst peers. This sometimes manifests itself in the form of bullying.

In order to combat this particular root cause, there is a need to build up the confidence of each student and this has to go deeper than just superficial praise and rewards. There should be a focus on helping students discover their own self worth. This can often be done with the help of a school counselor or professional, but the teachers need to be able to do some of this discovery and work with the counselors to put together an effective plan.

Parents should also be a part of this process. The sad truth is that some of the parents are in part responsible for the lack of self worth and don’t see bullying as anything other than “kids being kids”. So, unless parents of the children are willing to understand the nature of this type of behavior, the teachers and counselors may need to contribute the majority of the help. Identifying the problems and forming a plan is just a start. Build up the children’s self worth and a large part of the problem will go away.
